Housing Need and Repairs

Rate of Core Housing Need

A household is deemed to be in core housing need if the unit does not meet at least one of the three criteria (suitability, affordability and adequacy) for housing, and it can't afford a suitable alternative that meets these three criteria elsewhere in its own community.

Note: Due to rent freezes and other measures put in place during the pandemic, Core Housing Need and Rate of Unaffordable Housing Only figures for 2021 are likely to be below what they would otherwise be.

Rate of Unaffordable Housing Only

Housing is defined as unaffordable if the household is paying more than 30% of its gross income on either mortgage payments or rent.

Rate of Inadequate Housing Only

Housing is defined as inadequate when the unit is in need of major repairs.

Rate of Unsuitable Housing Only

Housing is defined as unsuitable if it doesn't have enough bedrooms for the people living in the unit
